WSO2 Named Gartner Leader as API Management Enters the Agentic AI Era

WSO2

WSO2 has been named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for API Management, highlighting the growing shift in enterprise API strategies as organizations move from conventional application connectivity toward AI agents and machine-driven consumption.

The company’s WSO2 API Platform is designed to manage APIs, AI services and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers through a modular architecture that can run across cloud, hybrid, self-managed and air-gapped environments.

The platform is positioning agent readiness as a core API management requirement. WSO2 automatically provides mechanisms including llms.txt, api.md endpoints, Arazzo workflows and an MCP Registry API, while allowing enterprises to control which APIs agents can discover and consume. REST APIs defined through OpenAPI can also be exposed as governed MCP services.

“Governance has to meet AI traffic where it already runs and be adoptable one piece at a time, and enterprises shouldn’t have to replace their API platform to catch up. We have rearchitected our WSO2 API Platform to unify API and AI management, governance and monetization while maximizing our customers’ flexibility.” — Derric Gilling, Vice President and General Manager, API Platform, WSO2

Security and governance are becoming particularly important as agentic workloads generate new forms of API and AI traffic. WSO2’s AI Gateway provides policy controls for LLM and MCP traffic, including authentication, authorization, tool-level rate limiting and guardrails, while providing visibility into calls moving through the platform.

WSO2 is also emphasizing flexibility over platform lock-in. Components are offered as independent products, allowing organizations to deploy capabilities such as the AI Gateway, MCP Hub or Developer Portal without replacing their existing platform.

Monetization extends across API, AI and MCP traffic, including token consumption, with usage attributed to teams, customers or agents.

The broader significance is that API management is evolving into an AI governance layer. As enterprises deploy autonomous agents, controlling what those agents can access, how they operate and how their consumption is measured will become increasingly central to enterprise architecture.
