Nutanix’s 2025 Healthcare Cloud Index reveals near-universal GenAI adoption, yet infrastructure modernization remains a critical
A new report from Nutanix reveals that the healthcare sector is leading the charge in adopting Generative AI (GenAI) and containerized applications, yet outdated IT infrastructure threatens to stall progress. The seventh annual Healthcare Enterprise Cloud Index (ECI) shows that 99% of healthcare organizations are already using GenAI tools—from chatbots to clinical automation—more than any other industry.
Despite this rapid adoption, 96% of respondents admit their current data security and governance frameworks are not robust enough to support GenAI at scale. The report highlights a growing urgency to modernize legacy systems to meet the demands of privacy, scalability, and resilience.
“Healthcare’s swift GenAI adoption is driven by accessible tools, but concerns around data protection remain. We expect broader internal adoption once these issues are addressed.”
Scott Ragsdale, Senior Director of Sales for Healthcare at Nutanix
“In healthcare, every decision impacts patient outcomes,” said Jon Edwards, Director IS Infrastructure Engineering at Legacy Health. “We’re investing in infrastructure that supports long-term innovation without compromising data privacy or security.”
The study, conducted by Vanson Bourne in Fall 2024, surveyed 1,500 IT and DevOps leaders globally. It found that integration with existing IT systems (79%), data silos (65%), and cloud-native development challenges (59%) are the top barriers to GenAI deployment.
Scott Ragsdale, Senior Director of Sales for Healthcare at Nutanix, noted, “Healthcare’s swift GenAI adoption is driven by accessible tools, but concerns around data protection remain. We expect broader internal adoption once these issues are addressed.”
The report also highlights a surge in application containerization, with 99% of healthcare organizations either using or planning to use containers. This shift is expected to enhance data access and security across hybrid and multicloud environments.
As GenAI becomes integral to healthcare operations, from patient support to code generation, the need for modern, secure, and scalable infrastructure is more pressing than ever. Nutanix urges IT leaders to prioritize infrastructure upgrades to fully realize GenAI’s transformative potential.
