Cloudflare Radar data shows football fans worldwide drove sharp shifts in online activity, from traffic drops during kickoffs to surges during breaks and after matches
Cloudflare has released new insights from Cloudflare Radar revealing how the 2026 FIFA World Cup significantly altered Internet traffic patterns across the globe, highlighting the influence of one of the world’s most-watched sporting events on online behavior.
Drawing on data from Cloudflare’s global network, the analysis found that billions of football fans changed their online habits throughout the tournament, causing measurable fluctuations in Internet activity. Traffic levels typically dropped when matches kicked off as viewers turned their attention to live broadcasts, before rebounding during halftime and following the final whistle.
Among the tournament’s most notable findings, Argentina emerged as the team with the greatest impact on global Internet traffic. Cloudflare reported that Argentina’s matches generated an average traffic deviation of around 17% across countries worldwide, making them the most influential fixtures of the tournament.

Interestingly, the World Cup final was not the event that produced the biggest online shift. Instead, Argentina’s quarterfinal clash against Switzerland triggered the largest worldwide change in Internet activity, surpassing even the championship match.
The report also highlighted what Cloudflare called the “time-zone paradox,” where matches broadcast between midnight and 8 a.m. local time created some of the largest spikes in Internet usage as fans stayed awake or woke early to watch. Even short hydration breaks led to measurable increases in traffic as viewers briefly returned online.
In addition, Cloudflare observed increased activity on sports betting platforms throughout the tournament.
