Ooredoo’s 5G+ Launch Signals Qatar’s Push Toward an AI-Ready Digital Economy

Sheikh Ali bin Jabor

Ooredoo Qatar has launched the country’s first 5G+ mobile network, marking a significant step in Qatar’s digital infrastructure evolution as operators increasingly prepare networks for AI-driven applications, industrial automation, and next-generation digital services.

The launch builds on the company’s earlier investments in 5G Standalone (SA) and 5G Advanced, extending network capabilities through higher speeds, lower latency, and increased capacity. While consumers will benefit from improved streaming, mobile gaming, and broadband performance, the strategic significance lies in the network’s enterprise potential.

Across the telecommunications industry, 5G is increasingly being viewed not simply as a connectivity upgrade but as a platform for digital transformation. Technologies such as network slicing, edge computing, and advanced IoT connectivity are creating opportunities for enterprises to support mission-critical applications, real-time monitoring, and AI-powered operations.

For businesses, Ooredoo’s 5G+ infrastructure could enable a new generation of connected services. Enhanced reliability and lower latency make it suitable for real-time equipment monitoring, industrial automation, intelligent asset tracking, predictive maintenance, and AI-enabled decision-making. The platform’s support for network slicing also allows organizations to create dedicated connectivity environments tailored to specific operational requirements.

“From launching the world’s first 5G network in 2018 to deploying Qatar’s first 5G Standalone core network, we have consistently advanced connectivity. This launch marks the next step in that journey.”

— Sheikh Ali bin Jabor bin Mohammad Al Thani, Chief Executive Officer, Ooredoo Qatar

The timing is significant. Governments across the Gulf are accelerating investments in smart cities, AI adoption, digital government services, and intelligent infrastructure. Qatar’s National Vision 2030 and Digital Agenda 2030 place advanced connectivity at the center of national development plans, making telecommunications infrastructure a strategic enabler of economic diversification.

The rollout also strengthens Qatar’s position in an increasingly competitive regional digital landscape. Neighboring markets are investing heavily in AI-ready networks, sovereign cloud platforms, and smart infrastructure, creating pressure on telecom operators to evolve beyond traditional connectivity services.

For CIOs and technology leaders, the key takeaway is that 5G+ represents more than faster mobile broadband. It provides a foundation for AI, edge computing, IoT, and autonomous operations. As enterprises modernize digital operations, network infrastructure is becoming a strategic business asset rather than a utility service.

With 5G+ now commercially available, Ooredoo Qatar is positioning connectivity as a catalyst for the country’s next phase of digital and economic transformation.
