New Rome facility to become a major digital and AI hub connecting Europe and the Mediterranean

Vertiv, a global provider of critical digital infrastructure, has been selected to supply advanced AI-ready power and cooling technologies for Digital Realty’s new ROM1 data center in Italy — a milestone project set to position Rome as a key Mediterranean digital hub.

The facility, with a planned capacity of over 3 MW, will feature Vertiv’s next-generation power and cooling infrastructure designed for high-performance computing (HPC) and AI-intensive workloads. Scheduled to begin operations in 2027, ROM1 will serve as a carrier-neutral facility that connects major Mediterranean cities through fiber networks and submarine cables, complementing Digital Realty’s existing sites in Marseille, Athens, and Crete.

“The growing adoption of AI is driving the need for sophisticated, scalable, and energy-efficient data center infrastructure.”

Karsten Winther, President, EMEA, Vertiv

“Rome is emerging as a crucial gateway for digital infrastructure between Europe and the Mediterranean,” said Alessandro Talotta, Managing Director, Italy, Digital Realty. “The cutting-edge technologies selected for ROM1 will help establish it as a strategic AI hub, setting new benchmarks for energy efficiency and computing performance.”

Vertiv’s portfolio for ROM1 includes AI-adaptive cooling systems, high-efficiency power distribution, and smart environmental controls that respond to real-time conditions. The systems are designed to integrate with alternative energy sources, reducing the facility’s environmental footprint while maintaining reliability and uptime.

“Our cooling and power solutions are built on decades of experience supporting the most demanding applications,” said Karsten Winther, President for EMEA, Vertiv. “They’re optimized for scalability, helping customers meet both performance and sustainability goals.”

With its strategic location and AI-optimized infrastructure, ROM1 is set to anchor Italy’s emergence as a major European data hub, driving connectivity, efficiency, and innovation across the region’s expanding digital economy.
