Cyberattacks in UAE Surge 3x Amid Iran Conflict, Raising Alarm for Critical Sectors

William Wright, CEO of Closed Door Security

Daily attack attempts spike to 600,000, prompting urgent calls for stronger cyber resilience across industries

Cyberattack attempts targeting the United Arab Emirates have surged nearly threefold to around 600,000 per day, according to data from the UAE Cyber Security Council, as geopolitical tensions linked to the Iran conflict intensify.

The spike marks a significant escalation from the previous baseline of approximately 200,000 daily attacks, underscoring how quickly cyber threats can amplify in response to global instability.

Industry experts warn that the increase is not just a temporary spike but a reflection of a deeper, structural link between geopolitical conflict and cyber risk.

“Geopolitical instability is now directly fuelling cyber risk.” — William Wright, CEO, Closed Door Security

William Wright, CEO of Closed Door Security, said, “These figures show how instability in the physical world directly translates into digital threats.” He added, “A threefold increase in such a short period will have caught many organisations off guard.”

The surge is particularly concerning for organisations operating in critical infrastructure sectors such as oil and gas, where heightened targeting by threat actors is expected.

Wright emphasized that the current environment should act as a wake-up call for enterprises across the region. “Organisations must treat this as a catalyst to strengthen their defences,” he said, noting that preparedness and resilience are now business-critical priorities.

Despite the rise of sophisticated, AI-enabled cyberattacks, experts stress that foundational security practices remain essential. These include maintaining full visibility of digital assets, regular vulnerability testing and patching, employee awareness training, and robust incident response planning.

“Basic cyber hygiene is still the first line of defence,” Wright noted. “From asset visibility to incident response rehearsals, these must become core business practices.”

As cyber threats continue to evolve alongside geopolitical developments, organisations in the UAE face increasing pressure to shift from reactive security postures to proactive, resilience-driven strategies.
